Flapper - Part 1

The iconic image of the American flapper - bobbed hair, charcoaled eyes, cocktail and cigarette in hand - has come to symbolize old-fashioned glamour. Zelda Fitzgerald, Clara Bow, and Coco Chanel all subscribed to the flapper ethos of fun and frivolity. But according to author Joshua Zeitz, the flapper contributed much more than clothes and makeup. She was a new kind of American woman, the kind who left her small town for a big city job, and quickly acquired a nightlife to match. Bold with men and frivolous with money, she loved nothing more than to spit in the face of tradition. Joshua Zeitz's new book Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity and the Women Who Made America Modern begins with a startling photograph. I began our interview by asking him to describe it.
